English Springer Spaniel
The English Springer Spaniel has two groups of dogs, field and show, with almost completely segregated gene pools. The field bred dog has lots of stamina and speed. It has a shorter, rougher coat, the ears are less pendulous and they normally shed in the spring and summer. Field dogs are selected for their hunting ability rather than their appearance. Show dogs have longer hair and a shorter tail in countries that permit docking. The coat comes in four different colour varieties; black and white, liver and white and either can come with tan above the eyes or muzzle.
The Spaniel is an relaxed and caring animal, great as a family dog. It is alert, intelligent and likes to please, making it an ideal hunting dog. As the dog has a very high energy level it will usually require lots of exercise to keep it occupied. Retrieving hidden objects will provide mental stimulation for this dog, bred for its skill at this task. As with all dogs, the springer must be socialised at a young age to form healthy behaviour around children or pets.
