Labrador Retriever

Labrador Retrievers are affectionate and lovable dogs with an amiable temperament. They love to play and they thrive on human attention, as such they are not suited to people with a lack of time. Labrador Retrievers have been known to be destructive (e.g. destructive chewing) when left on their own for too long.

Labrador Retrievers make excellent family pets as they enjoy feeling part of the family and get on well with children. Labrador Retrievers are an intelligent and obedient breed of dog and are easily trained, however it is best to start training them as puppies.

Labrador Retrievers are a handsome breed of dog that is sturdy and large in size. They range in colour from black to yellow and chocolate and have a short, sleek coat. Their height reaches 22-24 inches (56-61cm.) for dogs and 21-23 inches (53-58cm.) for Bitches. Their weight ranges from 60-75 pounds (27-34kg.) in males and from 55-70 pounds (25-32kg.) in Bitches. Some males can grow to 100 pounds (45kg) or more.

Labrador Retrievers are fairly low maintenance in terms of grooming and will need to be brushed once a week. They shed their coats at different rates depending on the season and will therefore require more grooming at different times of the year.

Labrador Retrievers are prone to hip and elbow dysplasia, PRA and eye disorders, CMO, thyroid problems, vWD, diabetes, OCD and heart problems. They are also prone to weight gain as they are known to eat a lot, as such it is important that they receive regular, vigorous exercise. The average life expectancy of a Labrador Retriever is approximately 10-12 years.
